ICMR INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIPS


The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) invites applications from Indian biomedical scientists for the international fellowships for the year 2010-11.

Number of fellowships: Young scientists-12; Senior scientists-6

Duration: 3-6 months for young scientists and 10-15 days for senior scientists

Eligibility:

· M.D/PhD degree with at least three years teaching/research experience for young scientists and at least fifteen years teaching/research experience for senior scientists.

· Regular position in a recognized biomedical/research/health institution in India .

· Below 45 years of age for young and 55 years for senior scientists.

Financial support:

US $ 2400 per month, contingency grant of Rs.15,000/- and return economy class air ticket (excursion airfare) for young scientists. US $ 160 per day (including US$ 75 as per diem and rest for accommodation expenses) and return economy class air ticket (excursion airfare) for senior scientists.

Note:- The applicant should submit a letter of acceptance from the foreign Institute where he/ she proposes to work along with a concrete plan of training / research work to be undertaken during the fellowship.

- Recommendation by the Head of the parent organization / institute is essential.

- Incomplete applications will not be entertained.

- Decision of ICMR will be final.

- If selected, the fellowship is to be availed before 28th February, 2011.

ICMR-Post Doctoral Research Fellow (Scheme)

ICMR Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Scheme is being instituted to foster high quality research opportunities to promising fresh PhD/MD/MS holders in the cutting edge areas of basic science, communicable and non communicable diseases, reproductive health including nutrition at ICMR Institutes/ Centers. Special focus will be on fundamental research in areas of science and other priority areas identified by ICMR from time to time. ICMR intends to offer fifty (50) such fellowships every year for working in ICMR Institutes/Centers with state-of-art R&D facilities. These fellowships will be allocated by Director General, ICMR, depending upon the needs of the Institute /Centre.

Eligibility:

Fresh PhD/MD/MS within one year of completing PhD/MD/MS and also those who have submitted PhD/MD/MS thesis.

ICMR Postdoctoral Research Fellowship is open to Indian nationals only.

Tenure:

Two years and extendable for maximum one more year based on outstanding performance and recommendations by the Director / Officer-in-Charge of the concerned ICMR Institutes/Centers.

Maximum Age Limit:

32 years, relaxable upto 5 years in case of SC/ST/OBC/PH and women candidates, as on last date of application for a particular batch (30th June/31st Dec.) as may be applicable.

Remuneration:

ICMR Post Doctoral Fellows will be paid a consolidated fellowship of Rs.35,000/- per month plus House Rent Allowance (HRA)/Non-Practicing Allowance (NPA) as Per rules of ICMR and a contingency grant of Rs.3.0 lakhs per annum. 25% of the contingency grant can be used for travel including per diem expenses.

Mode of Selection:

Selection of the “ICMR Postdoctoral Research Fellows” will be made through interview of short listed candidates by specially constituted Committees by Director General based on their quality of thesis, relevant to their project submitted for consideration and its relation with the thesis, quality of the proposed work to be carried out and its relevance to the Institute, publications, citation and its impact factor as well as performance in the Interview. No TA/DA will be paid by ICMR for attending the Interview. The place of interviews will be decided by the Director General, ICMR. Eligible candidates must route their applications through the sponsoring ICMR Institutes/Centers. Applicants coming abroad may also be considered in absentia, if eligible and found suitable by the Committee. Applicants who have not awarded their Ph.D/MD/MS Degree at the time of interview, they can join ICMR PDF by 30th June/31st December in a particular year. For example, applicants who have submitted their application by 31st December in a year they can join by 30th June next year provided Ph.D/MD/MS degree is awarded by this date.

Accommodation and other benefits:

Accommodation may be provided by ICMR Institutes/Centers if available. However, in such cases HRA will not be paid. ICMR Postdoctoral Fellows will be entitled for medical benefits and leave as per the ICMR Rules for JRF/Research Associates.

Other relevant information:

Fellowship amount will be paid to ICMR institutes/Centre every six months including contingency grant.

All other rules and regulations as applicable to ICMR JRF/ Research Associate (can be seen at ICMR Website) will be applicable to PDF’s. In all matters, the decision of ICMR shall be final.

ICMR in collaboration with PGIMER, Chandigarh will hold a National Level Examination for the award of Junior Research Fellowships (JRF), for Indian national candidates at Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata Mumbai,Guwahati and Hyderabad on Sunday, July 18th, 2010.

A total of 150 Fellowships would be awarded; 120 fellowships awarded in Life Sciences stream (like Microbiology, Physiology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Human Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Biophysics, Immunology, Pharmacology, Zoology, Environmental Sciences, Botany, Veterinary Sciences etc), and thirty (30) fellowships in Social Sciences stream (like Psychology, Sociology, Home Science, Statistics, Anthropology, Social work & Health Economics ).

Application form duly completed must reach the Registrar; Academic Section PGIMER, Chandigarh-160012 by registered/Speed post on or before 28.04.2010. Candidates from remote areas /regions may submit their application forms duly completed latest by 03.05.2010.

Eligibility:

Educational: M.Sc/M.A or equivalent degree with minimum 55% marks for General/OBC Candidates and 50% for the SC/ST & Physically Handicapped (PH) candidates in the subjects mentioned above. Candidates appearing in the final year examination (2009-2010) can also apply.

Age Limit: The upper age limit for admission to the eligibility test is 28 years as on 30-09-2010 (relaxable up to 5 years in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/PH/ female candidates and 3 years in the case of OBC.

Indo-UK Rheumatology Travelling Fellowship

Objective : To fund a promising young rheumatologist (trainee) to attend an International Rheumatology Conference: BSR or EULAR

Recipients of the fellowship are encouraged to spend some time in one or more Rheumatology units of their choice in UK to gain further experience in their area of interest. The duration of visit can vary from 6 weeks to 3 months dependant on personal circumstances and be linked to the back of the conference. Applicants should be members of IRA and should have demonstrated their commitment to Rheumatology by signing in/already working in a Rheumatology training programme. Applicants are at liberty to apply for additional funding to other agencies

General Instructions and Information

1) Courses will commence in July of each year.

2) Advertisements will be available on the institutional website (www.kem.edu) and the intranet and on notice boards of all municipal medical colleges.

3) Basic qualification: As determined for each certificate/fellowship course- see table

4) Interview: By a panel of experts of three (3) - including a Senior Professor, and at least one external expert and an internal expert.

5) Selection procedure- Selection will be based on performance at interview (30%), University level academic merits (20%) publications if any (30%) and recommendations from PG teacher (20%).

6) Pattern of exam- Each year, an examination coordination committee(ECC) consisting of three teachers running Fellowship/certificate courses will be nominated by the director.

Both theory and practical Examinations will be concluded within 15 days of the end of the course. Each examination will have one internal and one external examiner (approved by the ECC).

- Theory: 100 marks. 10 short answer questions of 10 marks each to be attempted from 12 questions. Passing marks 50%. All theory examinations will be held on a single day for all courses of similar lengths.

- Practicals: Each candidate will be examined by both examiners simultaneously for between 60 and 90 minutes. This will cover a viva-voce and practical.. Details will be dependent on the subspeciality. Passing marks 50%. Candidates have to pass individually in both theory and practical.*

7) Announcement of results: Results will be announced on the Website and institutional notice board within one week of the conclusion of the examination. The result will be only “Fellowship granted/Denied and no specific markings will be done. Second attempt at the examination will be permitted at the end of the course ( no later than 3-6 months depending upon the length of the course). Only two attempts will be allowed.

8) Award of Fellowship- The courses are accredited and approved by the Mahashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS). Certificates will be awarded by the MUHS. The University with signature of the Vice Chancellor and head of institute will award the certificate which will be given in the month of June of the next year.

9) Travel for interview will NOT be reimbursed.

10) Selection for the Fellowship/Certificate training will NOT amount to becoming an employee of the MCGM. Individuals who are already permanent employees of the MCGM (in-service candidates) shall continue to be MCGM employees and will do the fellowship/certificate work in addition to their regular MCGM responsibilities.

11) Fellows and trainees will abide by rules of the MCGM at all times and report to the course co-ordinator and head of the department.

12) The institute will make all attempts to provide accommodation and a stipend, but this is not guaranteed.

13)For courses , where persons with postgraduate diploma are also eligible, MD/DNB candidates will be given preference.

14). The decision of the ECC will be binding on all matters pertaining to the examinations.

15) The policy on reservations will be as per applicable Government of India rules.

*the UG course in clinical research will have one final examination at the end of the course and 50% is the minimum requirement for award of the certificate.

Retina Fellowship at AIMS, Kochi

Retina Fellowship Programme at AIMS, Kochi

The fellowship is for one year and will include a comprehensive training in diagnosis and management of common retinal disorders with exposure to surgical management as well. At the end of the training period we aim to make the candidate well versed in indirect ophthalmoscopy, fluorescein angiography and OCT, all laser procedures using both slit lamp and indirect ophthalmoscope delivery systems, intravitreal injections, cryotherapy of anterior lesions and to be familiar with basic retinal surgeries-vitrectomy and buckling procedures.

The trainee will be expected to keep him (her) self aware of latest developments in retina and be active academically. He/She will have teaching responsibilities as well as the opportunity for presentations and publications. Community ophthalmology work and carrying out procedures at outreach centers, as part of our teleophthalmology project will also be expected of the trainee.

The candidate must have a MS/DNB/DO degree in ophthalmology.
