Palliative Medicine Fellowship

Postgraduate Fellowship
in Palliative Medicine at CMC. vellore

Who is eligible to apply?
Doctors who have an M.B.B.S Degree recognized by the
Indian Medical Council, and have completed their compulsory
rotating residential internship.
Candidates with postgraduate qualifications – diploma/
MD/DNB are also invited to apply. Overseas candidates are
requested to contact us, so that accreditation with the Indian
Medical Council can be worked out.
What is the duration of the course?
This will be a one year residential course offered in a
modular format with specific learning objectives and regular
assignments. There will be interim and final assessments,
which will be both written and clinical.
The Post Graduate Fellowship in Palliative Medicine is accredited
by the Christian Medical College, Vellore Association.
Currently Palliative Medicine courses in the country
are not accredited by the Medical Council of India.
What is the selection process?
There is no written examination. You will need to complete
a structured application form. Suitable candidates will be
called for an interview at Vellore.
Am I eligible for stipend or accommodation?
You will be paid a consolidated stipend (currently
Rs.12,000/- per month), which meets living costs and provided
a free partly furnished single room in the Education
Centre at the grounds of the Sneha Deepam Hospice, 7
kms. from CMC hospital. Dining facilities are available in
Snehadeepam, and in the hospital campus.
When does the course start?
The Fellowship normally commences in April 2009. However
if a candidate needs a later start date, this can be accommodated.

convenient date.
What is the academic content of the course?
The academic content covers pain, gastrointestinal, respiratory,
ENT and genitourinary symptoms, palliative oncology,
emergencies, psychiatry, terminal care, HIV/AIDS,
chronic oedema, wound care and paediatric palliative
care; teaching skills, ethics, spirituality, teamwork and
models of palliative care, communication, professional
and management skills.
The clinical experience and academic sessions within a
reputed 2000 bedded teaching hospital, and in home and
hospice care will empower you to practice palliative care
in different settings, and to integrate it with main stream
medicine, and to work collaboratively with different clinical
departments.
Interested candidates will also be provided mentorship in
research and scientific writing.
Clinical experience
You will be part of the Palliative Care team at CMC Vellore
and will be expected to participate in clinical, and educational
activities.
Please note: the fellowship involves one year of stipendiary
inservice training, Including on-call duties in the hospital
and the hospice.
You will be requested to maintain a log book of case studies
through clinical experience in the following settings:
• Palliative care clinic and hospital referrals
• Home care
• Hospice
• Clinical exposure to allied departments
What is the course fee?
There is no course fee for the Postgraduate Fellowship in Palliative Medicine.
